On a cold and snowy Saturday afternoon in Defiance, Lucy Porter added her name to the Maumee girls basketball history book.
Porter scored 17 points in the game, and none were arguably more important than No. 7, which put her at 1,000 career points. She now sits with 1,010 points in her Panthers career.
Porter was acknowledged before the boys home basketball game on Saturday night. She will receive her official recognition before this Saturday’s home girls game against Fostoria.
“I want to thank the Maumee community for the immense support not only Saturday night but the past four years,” Porter said. “This is such a special place with amazing people and I am so grateful to be where I am. One-thousand points couldn’t have been done without my teammates, past and present, who have got me the ball and just made me a better player and person.
“This has been a goal of mine for a long time and I think it does validate my hard work and dedication. It means so much to me that I can be a part of Maumee history.”
Now that Porter has joined the 1,000-point club, the focus will turn on where here total ends up. At her current rate of 16.6 points per game, Porter would end up as the second-leading scorer in school history, with 1,176, provided she plays in the final nine regular season games and at least one playoff game.
That total would give her enough to pass Sue Pollock (1,092 points, set in 1985) and Reva Kerkulah (1,044, 2003).
In order to challenge for the overall scoring record of 1,264 points, set by Erin Vick in 1987, Porter would need an additional nine regular season games plus seven postseason games at her current scoring average.
Earlier this season, Porter eclipsed the 500-rebound mark. At her current average of 9.9 per game, she should easily end her Panthers career with more than 600.
Maumee ended the week with an 8-5 overall record and a definite chance to improve upon last year’s 13-win total. The Panthers are also 6-3 in the Northern Buckeye Conference, sitting in third place behind Genoa and Oak Harbor, with five games left on their conference schedule. Maumee will visit Oak Harbor on Thursday, January 23; the Rockets won the season’s first meeting, 52-50.
Porter and the Panthers are also focused on winning their first postseason game in seven years. The tournament draw will be on Sunday, February 2.
“Now that I’ve hit it, I’m super excited for the rest of the season,” Porter said. “No matter how we end up in the NBC, I am so extremely proud of our hustle and togetherness.”
