If nothing else, this season has proven to the Maumee girls soccer team that hard work pays off.
The Panthers started their season with two wins in their first nine games, but the struggles against those top teams started to turn into wins later in the season. They’ve won four straight games, including three last week.
“I believe they have always believed in themselves,” Maumee coach Jeremiah McNutt said. “This was proven by how hard they took the losses in the beginning of the season. Now, they are seeing the results of their hard work and dedication.”
Last week started with a 3-0 win over Bowsher, then a 5-0 win over Otsego in the Northern Buckeye Conference.
Evelyn Boyett had three goals and an assist against the Knights, and Charley Bischoff had a pair of assists. Ainsley Heckman and Miriam Findling had a goal each.
The Panthers (6-5-2, 3-1-1 NBC) closed the week with a big 2-0 road win over Wauseon. Findling scored both goals for Maumee.
So far this season, Boyett leads the team with 19 points (eight goals, three assists), Findling has 13 points and Bischoff has 11 points.
The Panthers have one game this week, at Lake, before the postseason seeding is released this weekend.
“Only thing to change is a formation change,” McNutt said. “The rest has been the same. We are using the hard start to peak at the right time. Now is the time to start trending up.”
